Summary: The role of Technical Scrum Master involves facilitating Agile delivery within cloud and engineering teams, focusing on high-quality and secure delivery of AWS, DevOps, and platform initiatives. The position requires collaboration with various stakeholders to address engineering challenges and optimize delivery flow. This role is part of a significant digital transformation program aimed at modernizing critical national infrastructure. The Technical Scrum Master will engage in technical discussions and drive engineering excellence across teams.
Key Responsibilities:
- Facilitate Agile ceremonies and support predictable delivery of AWS infrastructure, automation, and CI/CD initiatives
- Remove complex technical impediments impacting engineering teams
- Collaborate with the Technical Delivery Manager to manage sprint-level risks and cross-team dependencies
- Work closely with engineers to improve flow across CI/CD pipelines and deployment processes
- Promote engineering best practices including: Infrastructure as Code, Automated testing, Code reviews, DevSecOps principles
- Monitor delivery metrics such as: Velocity, Cycle time, Deployment frequency, Lead time for change, Defect rates
- Support backlog refinement with a strong understanding of technical enablers and architectural dependencies
- Encourage operational readiness, including documentation, monitoring, and support model considerations
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement, accountability, and technical excellence
- Escalate delivery risks with clear impact analysis
- Support incident learning reviews and promote shift-left quality practices
Key Skills:
- 5+ years' experience as a Scrum Master within cloud, DevOps, or platform engineering environments
- Strong understanding of AWS services, including: EC2, IAM, VPC, S3, Lambda, CloudWatch
- Experience working with Infrastructure as Code: Terraform, CloudFormation, AWS CDK
- Familiarity with CI/CD tools, such as: GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins, AWS CodePipeline, Bitbucket
- Understanding of containerisation and orchestration: Docker, ECS, EKS
- Experience working in regulated or government delivery environments
- Strong experience with Jira and Confluence for Agile tracking and reporting
- Understanding of DevOps performance metrics (DORA metrics) including deployment frequency and MTTR
- Experience managing technical dependencies and delivery risks in complex environments
- Exposure to incident, change, and problem management within live cloud environments
- Strong facilitation, stakeholder communication, and conflict resolution skills

About the Role
We are looking for a Technical Scrum Master to facilitate Agile delivery within cloud and engineering teams, ensuring high-quality, secure, and predictable delivery of AWS, DevOps, and platform initiatives.
Working closely with the Technical Delivery Manager, Product Owners, architects, and DevOps engineers, you will combine strong Scrum facilitation with sufficient technical depth to understand engineering challenges, remove complex impediments, and optimise delivery flow.
This role sits within one of the UK's most high-profile digital transformation programmes, supporting the stability and modernisation of critical national infrastructure.
Unlike a traditional Scrum Master role, you will actively engage in technical discussions, understand architectural dependencies, and help drive engineering excellence across cloud and DevOps teams.
