Summary: The Azure Cloud Operations Engineer role involves leading the migration of core services to Microsoft Azure for a major UK public sector organization. The engineer will be responsible for designing and operating a secure, resilient, and cost-efficient cloud foundation, ensuring reliability and governance in service delivery. This position requires a strong focus on automation, incident management, and operational excellence within Azure environments. The role is hybrid, requiring one day a week onsite in South London.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Define SLIs/SLOs and ensure GDS-aligned service reliability.
  • Lead P1/P2 incident response and reduce MTTR with Azure Monitor + ITSM integration.
  • Deliver Terraform/Bicep templates and PowerShell/Python runbooks for automation.
  • Deploy/optimise Defender for Cloud & Sentinel; implement automated threat response.
  • Enforce tagging, cost allocation, usage optimisation and governance policies.
  • Build dashboards with Azure Monitor, Log Analytics and expert KQL.
  • Govern Azure Update Management Centre across Azure + hybrid estates.
  • Manage DR plans, replication and secure long-term data retention.

Key Skills:

  • Deep Azure operational engineering experience.
  • Strong automation, SRE, SecOps and FinOps capability.
  • Expertise in Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, KQL, Defender, Sentinel.
  • Advanced IaC skills (Terraform/Bicep) and Scripting (PowerShell/Python).
  • Experience supporting complex or regulated enterprise/hybrid estates.
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104).
  • Highly desirable: Azure DevOps Engineer Expert (AZ-400) and Azure Solutions Architect Expert (AZ-305) or equivalent proven experience.

A major UK public sector organisation is undertaking a critical migration of core services to Microsoft Azure and seeks an expert Interim Azure Cloud Operations Engineer to design and operate a secure, resilient and cost-efficient cloud foundation.

You'll build the platform that future digital and citizen-facing services will rely on-ensuring reliability, automation, governance and GDS-standard service delivery.

Key Focus Areas

  • SRE & Reliability - Define SLIs/SLOs and ensure GDS-aligned service reliability.

  • Incident Management - Lead P1/P2 response, reduce MTTR with Azure Monitor + ITSM integration.

  • Automation & IaC - Deliver Terraform/Bicep templates and PowerShell/Python runbooks.

  • SecOps - Deploy/optimise Defender for Cloud & Sentinel; implement automated threat response.
